Leaders need the courage to prolong the uncertainty
COVID-19 has disrupted the way we work and created massive uncertainty in most workplaces. Uncertainty is inherently uncomfortable and fear-producing for many of us. So of course, we are longing for it to end.
The biggest mistake you can make as a leader, however, is to attempt to restore certainty by simply returning to old ways asap. It won’t work. Instead, leaders need the courage to prolong the uncertainty until new ways of working have been co-created.
Returning to work will not just be “plug and play”. We live in a new reality, and we have a rich bag of new experiences to learn from – good and bad. Leaders must seize the momentum to create more engaging and meaningful work practices. If they don’t, performance is likely to suffer and resistance to build.
This talk helps you understand the dynamics between courage and fear in the described scenario and gives you 3 simple ways to create a safe space for your people to explore new and better ways of working together.
